The Brutality of Hamas and the Shadow of Iran

Updated: Sep 25, 2024

The recent actions of Hamas, culminating in the brutal murder of hostages, including American-Israeli citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, highlight not just the depravity of this terrorist organization but also the malignant influence of Iran as the puppeteer behind Hamas’s brutality. This is not merely a regional issue—it’s a global one, with the lives of innocent civilians, including Americans, being ruthlessly sacrificed for political gain.

Hamas’s execution of hostages, including the horrific close-range shooting of six individuals who had endured nearly a year of captivity, underscores the inhumane tactics this group employs. These hostages were not just casualties of war; they were pawns in a deadly game orchestrated by Hamas under the watchful eye of Tehran. As we mourn the loss of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, whose life was cut short by this senseless violence, we must confront the uncomfortable truth: Iran’s hands are stained with the blood of these victims.

Iran’s support for Hamas is no secret. It provides the financial backing, weapons, and training that enable Hamas to continue its reign of terror. But Iran’s influence goes beyond mere support; it is the driving force behind Hamas’s strategy of using human lives as bargaining chips, with the ultimate goal of destabilizing the region and weakening Israel. The recent hostage executions were not just an act of desperation by a cornered terrorist group—they were a calculated move by Iran to deepen the divisions within Israeli society and to test the resolve of the United States.

This brings us to the troubling aspect of U.S. policy. At times, certain elements within the U.S. government have failed to fully support Israel’s efforts to defend itself against existential threats like Hamas. The reluctance to back Israel’s military actions completely, coupled with pressures to negotiate with terrorists, has only emboldened groups like Hamas and their Iranian masters. This approach risks undermining the strong alliance between the U.S. and Israel and does a disservice to American citizens who have become targets in this proxy war.

So, where do we go from here? The United States must adopt a more robust and clear-eyed strategy that addresses the root of the problem: Iran. First and foremost, the U.S. should unequivocally support Israel’s right to defend itself, including its efforts to dismantle Hamas. This means providing Israel with the necessary military aid and diplomatic backing to complete its mission.

Second, the U.S. must impose stricter sanctions on Iran, targeting not just its nuclear ambitions but also its support for terrorist organizations like Hamas. This should be accompanied by a concerted effort to cut off Iran’s access to global financial systems and to isolate it diplomatically.

Third, the U.S. should lead an international coalition to hold Iran accountable for its actions. This includes pushing for resolutions in the United Nations that condemn Iran’s support for terrorism and, where possible, pursuing legal actions against Iranian officials responsible for supporting terrorist activities.

Finally, we must remember that this is not just Israel’s fight; it’s a fight for the values that the United States stands for—freedom, democracy, and the sanctity of human life. The murder of Hersh Goldberg-Polin and others like him is a stark reminder that the threats we face are real and that our response must be resolute.

In closing, let us honor the memory of those who have fallen, including American citizens, by standing firm against the forces of terror. We must reject any policy that compromises our principles or the security of our allies. It’s time for the United States to lead with strength and clarity, ensuring that Iran’s influence is curtailed and that Hamas is dismantled once and for all.
