As the world watches the ongoing political theater in Venezuela, one thing is abundantly clear: Nicolás Maduro’s so-called election victory is nothing more than a calculated power grab, solidified by his hand-picked Supreme Court. The recent ruling by Venezuela’s top court, declaring Maduro the winner of the July 28th election, underscores the lengths to which this regime will go to maintain its stranglehold on power, even as the country teeters on the brink of collapse.
The Court’s Role in Perpetuating Fraud
Maduro’s victory declaration was predictable, not because of the will of the Venezuelan people, but because the court is stacked with loyalists from his Socialist Party. These judges were never going to bite the hand that feeds them. Instead, they quickly moved to discredit opposition claims of fraud, dismissing the overwhelming evidence that Edmundo González, the opposition candidate, won in a landslide. The opposition’s own tally showed González receiving 67% of the vote, a clear rejection of Maduro’s disastrous 11-year rule, marked by economic freefall and a mass exodus of nearly eight million Venezuelans.
Yet, despite this evidence, the court’s decision was a foregone conclusion, aimed at quashing any dissent within Maduro’s coalition of military and socialist elites. By rubber-stamping Maduro’s victory, the court is sending a message: this regime will hold onto power at any cost, even if it means deepening Venezuela’s isolation on the world stage.
Latin America’s Leftist Leaders Enable Maduro
While the court’s ruling was expected, what’s more troubling is the continued support Maduro receives from his allies in Latin America, particularly from the leftist governments of Mexico and Brazil. Presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have both shown a willingness to endorse Maduro’s authoritarian maneuvers, under the guise of respecting Venezuela’s “democratic institutions.” These leaders, who ought to be champions of democracy, are instead complicit in Maduro’s fraud, pushing the notion that another election or a coalition government could be a path forward—ideas that serve only to prolong Maduro’s reign of terror.
The International Community’s Tepid Response
Equally concerning is the lukewarm response from the international community, particularly the United States. While the U.S. and its allies have condemned Maduro’s actions, their statements lack the urgency and force needed to effect real change. The Biden administration’s reliance on diplomatic niceties and joint statements with other nations, which fail to hold Maduro accountable directly, only emboldens the dictator and his supporters.
Instead of strong, coordinated action, we see a piecemeal approach that allows Maduro to tighten his grip on Venezuela. The lack of decisive action against this fraudulent election sends a dangerous message to other autocrats in the region: that they too can manipulate democratic processes without fear of meaningful repercussions.
The Path Forward: A Call to Action
If the international community is serious about restoring democracy in Venezuela, it must move beyond tepid statements and take concrete steps to isolate Maduro’s regime. This means imposing tougher sanctions, supporting the opposition with more than just words, and rallying regional powers to denounce this sham election unequivocally. The Venezuelan people have spoken—they overwhelmingly rejected Maduro. Now it’s time for the world to stand with them.
